Today marks the First Sunday in Advent according to the liturgical calendar. The following collect from the Book of Common Prayer is to be repeated every day with the other collects until Christmas Eve. What I love about this prayer is how it connects the First Advent and Second Advent, Christ in the Manger and Christ in the Judgment Seat. Christians must learn, above all, to wait for the Messiah, and to do this well means that we keep shining when the forces of darkness threaten to extinguish us (Matthew 5:14-16).

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.
