On Christianity’s assignation of infinite worth to the human Thou

Roman Catholic theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar:

If one does not want to fall back into Idealism (i.e., collectivistic sociologism), get mired in materialism and hedonism, nor be shattered to smithereens on the barrier of the Thou (the Thou as Hell: Sartre), then Christianity remains the only open path which can assign infinite worth to the human Thou, because God ascribed such value to it in election and death on the cross; this assignation becomes only possible, in turn, if the I-Thou-We relation has itself absolute, divine dignity: in the Trinitarian Being of Love.
